THE ART OF REDIC

“I like to think that I am reviving these re-born relics until they once

again take their place as objects of aesthetic beauty in their own right and by filling a revitalized purpose in our shared cosmopolitan cityscape”

- Redic

Life is what you make it. Shanghai based African-American artist David Redic has followed his own artistic path to reclaim and renew lost and disowned objects strewn under the city urbanscape through an innovative and imaginative use of mixed visual installation and assemblage art. Elements such as abandoned chairs, palm trees, shards of mirrors, tires, ropes, and the stones and bricks from the demolished houses of our rapidly dissolving/evolving metropolises. These are the rubies in the rubble he discovers and collects from our urban landscapes to create masterpieces. His work is passionate, innovative and infused with metaphoric symbolism often accompanied with his own poetic prose.

The Dream Catcher series

Renewal and transformation endow Redic’s art with a joyous sense of celebration. The three series presented in this exhibition taken as a collective whole is life giving and life affirming. It is above all else the resurrection of the spirit of renewal.Redic drawing on his own Native American roots resurrects the original motif power of catching dreams.  But he uses glass to refract disjointed memories of a lost time and place from where the glass itself traces it own origin to reflect the power and beauty of dreams we have in the present projected onto hopes in the future. The more we reflect on the refractions in the dreamscape of our hopes and fears the more our dreams change us. Indeed, in a real sense they transform us.

The Blue Window series

For Redic mirrors enable the viewer to make sense of pieces of the puzzle of who we are by observing ourselves as living works of art within the created art. Mirrors are never about surface appearances. Appearances may change - like the urban landscape or culture for richer or poorer or our daily mood swings due to the whims of the weather - but mirrors can’t change who we are. Introspection and self-awareness of our inner lives certainly can.

The Thrones series

The Throne series is a meditation on how responsive we are to the creative power we have deep in ourselves. We have dominion over our own choices and thus our own powers of creativity. We can destroy or we can build. We can tear down or we can lift up. We are responsible at the service of our own creative choices to the harmonious shaping of inner lives and by that extension to the transformative nature of the city we all live in.

Renewal and transformation endow Redic’s art with a joyous sense of celebration. The three series taken as a collective whole is life giving and life affirming. It is above all else the resurrection of the spirit of renewal.
